4 Causes of Shingle Blow-Off and How to Fix Them

According to roof replacement experts, out of all the kinds of damage your roof can sustain, a shingle blow-off is one of the damages that you would not want to experience. This is because not only does it make your roof look unsightly but it also leaves the system and your home vulnerable to moisture damage.

In this article, the roofing professionals of Home Pro Exteriors lists the four common causes of shingle blow-off and how you can fix them.

  1. New Roof – If you’re experiencing shingle blow off when you’ve just had a new roof installed, it’s likely that the seal strips haven’t had a chance to properly set yet. Depending on the temperature of your area and the amount of sun exposure the shingle gets as well as its quality, the setting process of the strips can take four to six weeks. Thankfully, most contractors will replace the blown off shingles at no charge so long as it’s proven that the damage is due to faulty sealing.

  1. Improper Installation – Improper installation is another common cause of shingle blow-off and is usually caused by the nails being placed too high up on the shingle instead of across the nailing strip, providing less than adequate holding power and causing the shingle to be ripped from the nails. As with the sealing error, your roof repair contractor will replace the missing shingle at no charge so long as improper installation is the actual cause.

  1. Underlying Roof Damage – On the other hand, it’s also entirely possible that your roof sustained some underlying roof damage. Oftentimes, this is caused by the OSB board, plywood sheeting, or corrugated metal being affected by too much moisture. Once these components are damaged, your shingle nails can pop and cause the shingles to be blown off the roof. If this happens, call a roofer to conduct the necessary repairs as soon as possible.

  1. Age – An asphalt roof is expected to last anywhere from 10 to 15 years, depending on its quality and the care it was given. If your roof is approaching the end of its lifespan, the adhesive seals can no longer join the shingles, causing blow-off. If this is the case for your roof, consider scheduling a replacement in the future.
